The total hardness or GH value indicates the amount of dissolved magnesium and calcium salts in the water. These salts are directly responsible for many physiological processes of all plants and animals.  Beside the physiological processes the salts stabilize the KH value.  Some fish and plants require a higher GH level, other fish who naturally live in soft water requiring a lower GH level.
